Product Design, 2018

2.009 - Product Engineering Process is MIT’s capstone mechanical engineering course taken by over 160 students during senior year. Students are divided into teams of 20, and over the course of a semester we worked to create hundreds of design concepts, dozens of prototypes, and a single alpha prototype demoed to an audience of over 40,000.

The course covers design thinking, teamwork, presentation skills, industrial design, prototyping, and business modeling. During the semester, I had the opportunity to work with peers on rapidly evaluating novel fridge designs and forest fire protection mechanisms for homes.

Our final product, Tempra (pictured), is a device mounted above stoves which uses an infrared camera to record the temperature of all stove tops simultaneously, and report that information to a phone app through a cloud connection. Users can track the temperature of what they're cooking, allowing dishes to be prepared more accurately and consistently. In addition, the device can notify users if a stove has been left on. I contributed to the mechanical design, industrial design, user testing, business model, and final presentation of our product.
